Night-time wide angle stereo recording of manhattan, as heard from across the east river, the recorder was kindly allowed access to the veranda of the riverview restaurant & lounge in long island city and is facing the manhattan skyline. Some noises of the restaurant can be heard in the background, very subdued, the quiet lapping of the east river can be heard in the foreground, and manhattan bustle and traffic on the fdr drive is in the wide range. Recorded in march 2012 with a zoom h2, mics set to 90° dispersion.

This is a completely custom kick i made from scratch using a drum synthesizer and also mixed and edited with a waves puigtech eq modeled after the famous pultec eq and a waves puigchild compressor modeled after the famous $30,000 fairchild compressor. The sample rate is 24 bit/48k and a headroom of -6 or 3db i cant quite remember but nonetheless more than under clipping. A perfect day in a midwest small-town neighborhood for painting a picture of peace, and thoughtful reminiscing in mid october. From time to time you will hear the distant sound of creaking swings and laughter from a kids playground. A recording made around 7:30pm at night in mid october of 2012 of leaves skittering across an asphalt street, making that unique, crackly sound. You will also hear a train off in the distance which i think adds to the sound-scape of fall. At 1:51 into the recording a car whooshes buy and with it, a cluster of leaves trailing behind it trying in vain to keep up. . . That's always been a wonderful sound sequence for me to hear. A slow, fingerpicked chord progression on a 6-string guitar. I recorded this using my zoom h4n recorder and some external, stereo microphones. The microphones were the samson c0-2 and i had them mounted on two separatemicrophone stands: 1 was pointed at my left hand on the fret board to hopefully get the finger-squeaks, and the other microphone was pointed right above the sound-hole about 3 inches above the opening. A hot summers day in the deep swedish forest. Recorded with zoom h5 with two dpa 4060 mounted in a ab stereo fashion. Birds chatting and bugs flying by is major elements in this field recording. Decided not to remove to much of the bugs in post because i felt it might suck out the soul of the recording. In post: in pro tools i removed some low rumble, and and trimmed the highs just a little bit. Added a "pro expander" to lower some noise, both generated by the h5 and the location. Hope you like it.

This wood thrush was recorded around 7:30 in the morning in heavy woods in deep southern illinois. Unlike my earlier posting of the wood thrush singing at dusk, this morning recording has the wood thrush singing with lots of company, although he clearly rises above his neighbors. 17 seconds into the recording you hear the drumming of a woodpecker, and at one-minute 20 seconds into the recording you hear the distinctive-lonely sounding call of the huge pileated woodpecker. Recording made with good-quality stereo microphones so use headphones to get a wonderful experience.

A recording i made in may of 2013 as i was trying to get a good recording of the wonderful wood thrush recorded. You can still faintly hear the wood thrush in the background, but the nice surprise on this recording is the very clear, bubbling, trilling call of a proud little chipping sparrow. This recording was carefully made using my homemade parabolic reflector microphone. (*using my trusty rode ntg-2), and going into my handy zoom h4n recorder. I wanted to get as accurate a recording as possible so i bumped up the bit rate to 96 kpbs. I know it makes for a larger file, but i think it is worth it.

A recording of a typical busy, yet peaceful later afternoon sound-scape of a small midwestern town at 5:30pm on a weekday. This was recorded on tuesday may 24th, 2016 using the marantz pmd661 and two sennheiser me66 microphones. . . True stereo recording. You will hear the delightful sound of neighborhood kids playing a friendly - or sometimes not so friendly - game of wiffleball which adds to the reflective nature of this recording. The trilling bird calling towards the end of the recording is the beautiful little, rusty-capped chipping sparrow. These chipping sparrows converge on the midwest around this time and their calls can be mistaken as an insect. The pretty, soothing, trilling song of the pine warbler. These callings were recorded on sunday march 30th 2014 in a small pine grove, in the middle of a larger forest. On the day i recorded this, the weather was perfectly sunny, and mild -- temps about 60 degrees -- with very little wind. When i first heard this song, i was instantly reminded of a sewing machine. This was recorded in town, on a friday night (april 3rd, 2020) at a time when there is almost always more traffic, people and families walking and talking on the sidewalks. . This recording started at 11pm at night. . . What a strange, weird eerie feeling of this track. You will hear a lot of steady wind gusts, dry leaves being moved around by the strong southerly flow. . I recording made near some woods of the wind ebbing and flowing on an unusually mild day in late november of 2013. What i find unique about this recording is a lone cricket calling out at various times of this recording. . . Makes for a nice, almost melancholy feeling. It is almost like the cricket is not quite ready to hide away for the winter and is taking advantage of a rare 70-degree november day to call out as if to say "hey, i'm still here, waiting. . . In the grass. ". With headphones on, works wonders in clearing your head. . . This recording was made on a windy day, so there is some background "whooshing" wind; all in all, i think these pine cones softly landing on the needles can be put to good use. This recording was made on a warm, clear day in early june right on the sandy bank of the mississippi river -- between illinois and missouri. You hear the low, strong surge of the diesel engines as a barge slowly passes through and, what i find most enjoyable, you hear the gentle lapping of the river as the waves reach the sandy shore. You also hear various birds, including the common red-winged blackbird. Even though this recording was made around 3pm in the afternoon, you also hear a low chorus of insects adding to the relaxing summer-like ambience. A recording of the peaceful mid-autumn woods here in the midwest usa. I recorded this on november 15 2022 using a sony pcm d-100. In the northern hemisphere now, days now are much shorter, and much colder. Which means all of our energetic summer warblers and other migrants have long gone south, and are no doubt lounging around in a palm tree or something just gorging on insects. Here is the midwest woods? sure the summer birds are gone, but, the beauty of this season is that now you can hear the birds that never leave us. No matter how brutal the winter is, the blue jays, the black-capped chickadees, the many species of woodpeckers and the belted kingfishers never leave. This creates a different, but beautiful soundscape in the woods. For this particular recording, since i've found through years of roaming the woods, birds have a tendancy to be near water, i placed the recorder on a creekbank about 15 feet from a shallow creek. Now of course i could have gotten closer to the creek but by now the entire woods is a carpet of leaves -- this very slow-moving creek included. Which means the leaves had accumulated on thevery still creek water itself and i was concerned if i stepped on the leaves--thinking it was solid ground underneath, i would instead be "treated" to an ice cold pair of shoes and socks!. A semi-rare and priceless recording (at least to me) of a whippoorwill; a bird who, unfortunately, is declining in many areas of the country. This recording contains more hiss than many of my existing nature recordings, but i still want to post it so you can get sample of this wonderful signature sound of summer woods at dusk. Recording made in the shawnee national forest in late may of 2010 using my zoom h4n recorder. I used an audio technica at8035. I was trying out this microphone. This particular microphone does have a narrow acceptance angle, which is probably 1 reason for the hissiness. Still, go out in the summer woods around dusk sometime and maybe you will get lucky and hear this beautiful little bird whose distinctive calls have livened up the woods for generations of many youngsters – including me!.

The beautiful, simple call of the field cricket is one of my favorite insect sounds. In late summer though the huge choruses of katydids and cicadas often drown out the simple beauty of this love song. Later, as the season progresses into fall and the temps dip to where the cicadas and katydids no longer sing, these simple, beautiful field cricket calls still last up to the time that the days just can't stay warm any longer. I like to see how late into the season i can hear these guys---something just hauntingly mesmerizing hearing this sound and no other on a mild autumn day, after a cold night. . One of my favorite summer and late-summer sounds. The night-hawk is the star of this recording. This recording was made around 9pm at night in mid-august and, even though i never could see this nighthawk, his calls pierced through the night-sky to let me know he was up there, somewhere, orbiting on the prowl for mosquitos and other insects. I have always loved this sound ever since i was a kid and going to sleep at night i felt comforted knowing that, like some circling fighter jet, the nighthawks would be on the job, plowing down the population of mosquitos, while i slept all night. Here in the midwest we were treated to a nice preview of autumn here in the northern hemisphere. Both the temperature and humidity were nicely lower than usual and this soundscape was recorded featuring the beautiful northern breezes and a few of the birds that still live here. Since this ambience was recorded during the work-week, there are hardly any man-made internal combustion engine noises. Just the wind lifting and swirling through the tired forest and the blue jays, crows and insects. Recording made at 2:30pm on september 13 2022. Midnight recording from the streets of neukölln, berlin, on new years day 2009. In germany, this is the one day of the year when members of the general public are allowed to set off fireworks. Echoes of bombs and fusillades ring out across the city, while clouds of smoke tumble menacingly through the streets. Close by, a peaceful child sets off sparklers, and is astonished by the display. A drowsy, warm lazy hot day in mid-summer in the forest of the midwestern usa. As is the case around mid-july, the birds are not singing as much. Perhaps they are just exhausted from raising a family and wilting from the heat. The insect chorus ebbs and flows, like the ocean waves creeping up on the beach, and retreating back. Except, unlike the ocean which never stops moving, the insects will eventually stop singing and hibernate for the winter. I have always loved the sound of propeller-driven planes and their slow, molasses-like sound. That sound has always induced a melancholy touch to the recordings. To me, this drowsing plane symbolizes change -- even though the birds and plants are still in full growth, the end is near. . . In about four more weeks schools will resume, the emphasis for many will turn inward. Leaving the woods to deal with the transition. The droning plane, like ocean waves, symbolize change. . . A peaceful ambiance of some pine trees in early, early spring. The predominant, lower-pitched background is the strong south wind blowing through the tops of healthy pine trees. . . An unwavering "swooshing" that cuddles and curls around the flexible, thick-resin-filled pine needles. Also, from time to time, you hear the sound of the wind rattling some dead and brown oak leaves; oak leaves which are still stubbornly hanging on to their parent tree. I purposely did only a very bare minimum of post-processing on this sound so as to keep it as realistic as possible. Yes, there are quite a few wind rumbles that i toned down just a little bit. I did not totally get rid of the wind rumbles. I did this on purpose so you the true feeling of " being there " on that mild, but still raw cold day of spring could still be felt. At 4:35 into the soundscape the trilling of a pine warbler is heard---a warble of warm-sounding notes fighting back stubborn winter. A late summer soundscape that is a favorite of mine. . Microphones set up in some mature woods about 60 feet from a large lake on labor day weekend. Most of the background is the insects, which are very obvious during this time of year. The swelling of their volume is nap-inducing (*at least to me in my opinion. )here is the midwest this swelling and subsiding of the insect wave tells me that summer is just about starting to go back downhill, after a feverish peak. Despite the covid-19 of the year, nature does not seem to have changed her soundscape. Life goes on in the forests. The birds, whose job of raising young is over, are still there. . . They're just resting and relaxing and listening to the insects as well i'm sure. Now of course you will hear a few prominent birds in this captured moment:(1) a great blue heron squawks out starting at 1:17 into this piece. (2) the alarm call of a red-headed woodpecker can be heard at 2:14. Other than that, just the insects singing their hearts out and the assortment of birds taking secondary place during this time of year. A very peaceful, melancholy soundscape i recorded on labor day weekend in some woods, about 20 feet from a popular lake in the midwest. There was a small cove in between my setup and several campers across the way. . . They undoubtedly were enjoying one last time with nature starting to change from summer to autumn. The main sound is that of insects, not sure what the species is, but, they have a beautiful, drowsy "tick-tick-tick" sound that repeats. . . To me, this sound signals the very subtle, almost imperceptible march towards the autumn equinox. I swear, the longer you listen to this captivating insect, you're drawn into, almost like a hypnosis state of reflection. . . A couple things to listen for:(1) around 1:13 a very low splash. (2) at 1:38 a lone goose honks. (3) starting at 2:30 some very low volume, muted camper conversations. (4) at 2:36 a louder splash. (5) 2:41 more beautiful, un-hurried muted camper conversations. No doubt talking about how they need to break camp and return to the real world, but the "tick-tick-tick" of the insects have a strong hold on them. It is one of the largest shifting sand areas in western europe. The wind can blow undisturbed in many places, resulting in an ever-changing landscape. By purchasing it in 1921, it has been protected for 100 years and we can still enjoy this brabant sahara today. You can roam freely on the sand plain. So there is plenty of room to explore extensively. Marvel at the submerged trees, enjoy the chirping field crickets and quench your thirst at one of the many cafes or restaurants on the edge of this nature reserve. Walking, cycling or on horseback: it's all possible here. With the wind in your hair and the sand in your shoes. You may even come across the sheep herd. The sheep keep the heath short and eat away saplings. This is how they keep the area open. The loonse en drunense duinen still has 270 hectares of shifting sand. That sand creates rather extreme conditions: the soil is dry and nutrient-poor. The difference in temperature between day and night can be as much as 50 degrees celsius. This ensures a unique flora and fauna. The animals and plants have adapted or feel at home in drought, aridity and temperature fluctuations. Sand sedge and various lichens, for example. And the viviparous lizard, sandpit beetles and sand bees. All species that love sand. In the last ice age, the polar winds blew sand from the north to brabant, where it remained in thick packages.
